A history of flavour

Mr. Gerson (1956)
It is sixty years since the production of homemade tropical sweets was set up in the town of Custódia in the interior of Pernambuco State, Northeast Brazil, and it is here that the history of Tambaú began. The company was named Tambaú in honour of the founder’s birthplace. As a boy from a humble background, Gerson Gonçalves de Lima dreamed of becoming a great industrialist. By being enterprising and through determination and perseverance, the dream became a reality.

The manual production process gradually gave way to an industry run by professionals who have been highly trained in the area of food processing, and which uses state-of-the-art machinery. The recipe for this success includes dedication, responsibility and persistence as well as great investment in technology.

Today, Tambaú produces about 60 products which are distributed to states in North, Northeast and Southeast Brazil. With more than 270 employees, it has become the largest employer in the semi-arid backlands of the Northeast.

Tambaú demands high quality raw materials, and therefore constantly monitors its suppliers as well as employing trained professionals on its fruit plantations. These professionals are supported by agronomists appointed by the company, with the objective of managing and checking the plantations, thus guaranteeing Tambaú’s high standards of quality.

The company has a 300 hectare irrigated plantation in the São Francisco Valley for the production of red guavas. This is an incentive to fruit-growing agribusiness in the region, as well as giving the company a great advantage with respect to its competitors.
